I see at the pic that the it has Showa front suspension,calibers,carbon ceramic rotors and front fender same with the 1999 repsol factory machines. http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/1273/nsr500vdeecee.png _________________ Owner of : Honda NSR250 MC28 95sp colours / Honda NSR250 MC18 R6K SP / Honda RS250 NF5 89 in boxes / Honda C50 12V cub / Honda C50 12V super cub Japanese version /Yamaha XT600 89 benetton
Yes that's the bike. I think thats Marcus Ober riding it though.
As a side note I was told 500V engines eat reed valves. When we first took the motor apart we found all the reeds were broken. I have 4 new sets made in carbon in the States.
Mine has now down 2 trackdays, so I decided to strip it down and rebuild it. Good job I did too as it's eaten the new reeds already. It's going to need reeds as often as piston rings if this carries on. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
The ones I had made were by Carbontech. They were 0.42mm think and they are ripped to shreds. They are a huge reed and don't take well to being rev'ed to 12,000+ rpm that much it would seem.
I'm using HRC reeds now though I doubt they will last much longer looking at the state of the ones I took out of the bikes when we first got them. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Hi Stephen
As i can see at the NSR500V 2001 parts list ,it hasn't reed stoppers ,only supporters.
I suspect that the carbon reeds touch the wall of the crankcases at high revs,so this is why they damaged at this point, did you find any marks on the crankcases?.
Honda oem reeds are designed with accurate stifness to work without touching the crankcase at high revs,so they must wear less if the problem of the carbon reeds is that they touch the crankcase. _________________ Owner of : Honda NSR250 MC28 95sp colours / Honda NSR250 MC18 R6K SP / Honda RS250 NF5 89 in boxes / Honda C50 12V cub / Honda C50 12V super cub Japanese version /Yamaha XT600 89 benetton
The genuine Honda HRC reeds do the very same. The carbon ones have come out looking the same. I was told buy someone at some point that the 500V is known for it. As far as I can see there are no marks at all in the crank cases
HRC did three set ups, one without supports, one with supports and a set of duel stage reeds.
The reeds are 77mm wide and 45mm long.
Also the way the carbon is broken shows that its braking from the inside. So its the force of the reed hitting the cage rather than the reed hitting the crankcase. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...

To be fair I'm amazed the engine does what it does. The shear size of the pistons and the rev's it will pull must put a huge strain on the intake.
You can see which of the reed petals is working the hardest!
Are they out of the bike that made 130 something HP at the dyno a couple of months back?
I ran (250cc Tyga) carbon reeds for two seasons, they looked like new - they may have lost some internal structural integrity but you wouldn't know... _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
I know you don't like putting none Honda stuff on your bikes Steve but if you can use a V force reed my guess is that this problem will disapear. Intrinsic in the 4 petal design is the fact that the petals are moving much less to achieve the same flow or open area. You may even see some power gains. I suppose you may start by looking at various 250 motorcross reeds they do and find one that fits best to the manifold holes ect and they do a variety of different shaped stuffers so you can get a smooth tract and matched to the carb venturi with little work. Got to be worth considering bearing in mind the inevitable path the bits of broken carbon reed will take
Not sure if would be helpful or not. just for your knowledge, we have here a company based on Spain that are manufacturing any kind of parts in carbon, carbon/kevlar, wherever.
I has been used their services in the past to replicate some spare parts so, maybe could be an option for you if needed
So, just how many sets of HRC Reeds have you got available to you .... Its a bit of a worry.
Love my RS250 so much that i just keep wanting to ride it and ride it again ... its a real problem for me as i have fell out of love with the 4 strokes but the 2 strokes are just so expensive to keep running now they are obsolete to the mainstream.
I would pay you good money for just 10 laps of Donny on your 500 but at the end of the day the cost is in the upkeep and the limited spares.
I've got about 50 sets of HRC reeds now. Enough to keep both bikes going for a while.
If you go by the book it costs you around £62.00 per lap to run the 500 in spares and consumables around Donny (working on 2.5 miles). Of course it doesn't as we don't replace some parts as often as stated and some parts were "free" with the bike.
We (myself and Andy) looked at the possibility of renting one out to a limited number of NSR-World members maybe via a lottery but shelved the idea. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
