While conceived as an "exact replica" of Freddie Spencer's 1985 championship winning RS250RW NV1A, the NSR250R story began way back in 1983 with the MVX250F MC09.

Initially designed as a 400cc machine, Honda instead decided to try and break into the larger and more lucrative 250cc market.

After a number of years of disappointment with the 4-stroke NR project in World Grand Prix, Honda was keen to capitalise on their turnaround success in 1982 with the 2-stroke NS500, and released the MVX250F in February 1983.

The engine layout was inspired by the triple-cylinder NS500, but unlike the race bike’s 112° V3, the configuration was reversed, with two lower cylinders and one upper in a 90° V-angle.

With an aim of internal simplicity, the MC09 motor was constructed without a balance shaft. Honda’s solution to balancing the V3 configuration was left field, to say the least! To counteract the combined weight of the two lower piston assemblies, the top assemby would use a heavier conrod with a solid 18mm gudgeon pin, and a heavier piston.

The MC09 was delivered with  a non-powervalve motor, unlike it’s smaller sibling, the MBX125F JC10, which came equipped with ATAC.

With such a rush to break into the ultra-competitive 250cc 2-stroke market as soon as possible, much of the chassis was taken from the VT250F MC08. From the Comstar “Boomerang” wheels with inboard front disc, to the Pro-Link rear suspension, the two models bore striking resemblances.

The MVX250 was available in three different liveries, and despite a short lifespan of just one year, a wide range of accessories were available too. Radiator shrouds and a bellypan were common additions to the standard bikes, as was a pillion seat cowl, giving it a sportier look.

Almost 20,000 MVX250Fs were sold in 1983, but it never had the success of the Honda’s rivals. However, the triple cylinder motor would make a return in 1984, with the MVX250F being the inspiration behind the NS400R’s NC19E power unit.
